The term endodontics refers to the branch of dentistry that deals with the treatment of the endodontium, i.e. the space within the tooth element that contains the dental pulp (consisting of cells, such as odontoblasts and stellate cells, vessels and nerves)..
Endodontic therapy is resorted to when a lesion (carious, traumatic) leads to irreversible alteration of the pulp tissue, up to necrosis itself. It is also possible to resort to this method when the tooth element is to be involved in prosthetic rehabilitations that, due to the considerable reduction of dental tissue itself, would lead to irreversible pulpal alteration (pulpal necrosis due to iatrogenic causes).
